Chronicles of Neverael
Spirit is a very broad term used to refer to any number of strange, not-quite-classifiable beings of a purely metaphysical nature who did not, in fact, begin their existences as living things of any sort. Spirits often represent extremely strange and specific combinations of emotions, events, concepts, or even objects. A spirit might be called Arntalighz Of Winter Night’s Edged Words Spoken in Inebriation. Yes, they get that specific. Most spirits are content to go about their existences with little interaction with the physical plane – save for the occasional witchborn who happens by. Some, however, rebel against their purpose or become so corrupt in the pursuit of their purposes that they become what is referred to as a Demon. Demons deserve their own space for discussion, however.
Spirits are often invoked by Witchborn during the use of magick – they can provide some very potent, if subtle results. Spirits require a lot of help in affecting the physical world in an immediate, vulgar fashion – lots of essence. However, when they get the essence they need, their powers can be dramatic and frightening to behold. Spirits and Primordials should never be confused – a Spirit might become the Spirit of a House or another construct but can never be the Spirit of the Forest or anything like that nor can a Primordial be the Primordial of Bob’s House, etc.
Spirits are alien beings by their very natures – they only understand those things within their limited purview with any degree of familiarity and they don’t understand those things from the perspective of a human. They have nothing like a human experience against which to measure their knowledge – everything they know or think about is different from that which a human knows or thinks about by virtue of their very different perspectives. Communication with spirits is VERY difficult as a result.
